Venue: Hamilton Place
Location: London, W1J

Retail property organisation BCSC is bringing together four renowned industry names to look at “Mixing Your Uses” for its 2006 evening reception which will take place in London.

Paul Finch, Editor of Architectural Review; Jon Emery, Head of UK Development and Construction at Hammerson; Tom Bloxham, Chairman of Urban Splash; and Steven Hill, Chief Executive of Wagamama, will discuss how retail, commercial, leisure and residential development can work together to support vibrant communities. Giles Barrie, Editor of Property Week, will chair the event, which is now in its second year.

Jon Emery and Tom Bloxham will discuss the topic of ‘Residential and Retail: Uneasy Bedfellows or Perfect Match?’ Emery was Project Director responsible for the £750 million Bullring, Birmingham project, which was the largest regeneration project in Europe when completed in 2003. Bloxham jointly founded Urban Splash, which is currently investing over £1 billion in regeneration projects across the country.

Steven Hill will discuss ‘The Eating and Shopping Experience’. Formerly at PizzaExpress and Madisons Coffee PLC, Hill joined Wagamama as Group Finance Director in March 2004. He had a key role in the re-finance of the business and then subsequent sale to Lion Capital, and earlier this month was promoted to Chief Executive.

Paul Finch will speak on ‘Setting the Urban Agenda’. Finch is also Deputy Chairman for CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Westminster in 2004.

Comments BCSC President John Strachan:

“Mixing retail, commercial, residential and leisure uses is an art form and the speakers we are bringing together for this event are some of the leading practitioners in their respective strands. As towns and cities increasingly seek ways to regenerate their infrastructures and reinvigorate their economies, the ways in which these property strands and businesses mix is of vital importance.

A Business Development Workshop for the Construction Industry. To become successful in negotiating requires skills and experience to achieve a common goal that meets the needs of both parties. Everyone, at some time, enjoys a position of power over another person and has the ability to impose their desires, wishes, or wants upon them. Old-style negotiations based on this power, in the form of force, intimidation or even just plain old bluffing, are no longer valid for today's market. Being an effective negotiator requires you to think long term and win/win, rather than use the win/lose tactics and gambits that only deliver a short-term gain at the expense of the future.
