Terrace Hill - Mixed-Use Development - Middlehaven
Date: 10 Apr 2008
Plans for a major retail outlet on the gateway to Middlehaven have taken a major step forward.
The £30 million development on the brownfield site just off the A66 has received backing from Middlesbrough Council's planning committee.
The development, branded as Gateway Middlehaven by developers Terrace Hill, will now go to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, for full planning consent.
Plans for the development, which is expected to create 500 jobs and include a sports and fitness centre and 60-bed hotel on a site once earmarked for an Asda store, were unanimously approved by councillors.
Overall the development will feature a number of retail warehouse units, nine shops, a sports and fitness centre, a hotel and a pub, three restaurants and a food court, together with 600 parking spaces and footpath and cycling links from the North Ormesby under the A66.
Duncan McEwan of Terrace Hill said: "We are looking forward to pressing ahead quickly with our plans, once full consent is given by the Government. We will be delivering an exciting scheme which will regenerate a neglected area and create much-needed jobs"
Francis McIntyre, Liberal Democrat councillor for the Park ward, said: "This site has been in desperate need of regeneration for so long and I think the developer's plans are wonderful."
