Stamford Developments - Retail - Glasgow, Broomielaw
Date: 13 Jan 1999
Plans for a new £10 million landmark building in Glasgow's city centre have been unveiled by national developers Stamford Developments and J.J. Gallagher.
The scheme to create a striking hotel on Jamaica Street, is immediately adjacent to the city's central rail station and will create around 200 construction jobs and 175 permanent jobs.
The site was formerly a department store and following demolition is currently used as a car park. Located very close to Argylle Street and the main shopping areas in Glasgow, the site occupies a highly prominent position opposite the Glasgow Bridge over the River Clyde. The site is immediately accessed to the East and West via Broomielaw and Clyde Street.
Philip Akrill, chief executive of Stamford Developments said: "Glasgow is widely recognised as one nf the UK's friendliest cities. It welcomes visitors from all over the world and is the UK's third most popular tourist destination. This quality hotel will provide a superb building in a very convenient setting and, due to its location, the rooms will have excellent views south over the Clyde."
The 108,000 sq ft hotel will have 202 bedrooms on eleven floors including luxury penthouse apartments on the upper floors. The building will also include restaurant, bar, dining and conference facilities.
Plans for the hotel have been submitted by joint developers Stanmford and J.J. Gallagher to Glasgow City Council and a decision is expected early this year. The developers are already talking to a number of operators who are interested in the hotel development.
