Atlas Ward - General Development - East Kilbride, Scotland

Date: 09 Sep 2008

Atlas Ward is currently working on a project to build a mammoth new public sports complex in East Kilbride. The Playsport Scotland project was awarded to them by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine on behalf of joint venture, Playgolf Kilmartin Ltd.

The North Yorkshire-based steelwork contractor is responsible for the fabrication and erection of approximately 850 tonnes of structural steelwork for this project. The footprint for this building is 220,000 sq ft and the scope also includes the provision and installation of floor decking.

The new sports complex will include a 9 hole PowerPlay Golf course, featuring full-scale tributes to some of the UK's best-known links holes, plus a 58-bay golf driving range and a golf academy.

Playsport Scotland will also comprise one of the UK's largest indoor tennis centres, with 8 dedicated courts for both tennis and badminton.

For the footballers, it will provide eight 5-a-side football pitches, two 7-a-side football pitches plus a separate football bar and changing room.

Other sports facilities include a 36,000 sq ft 'family centre' with adventure golf, laser games and soft play area, and a 25,000 sq ft health and fitness centre with a 25 metre swimming pool.

Visitors will also find 6,000 sq ft of conferencing and events space, 7,000 sq ft of restaurant space, 15,000 sq ft of sports and sportswear retail space and 450 car parking spaces.

This new venture for East Kilbride will cater for sports enthusiasts from beginners to expert, and will benefit communities across Scotland. It is a partnership development between Playgolf (Holdings) Plc, Kilmartin Property Group and South Lanarkshire Council.
