Harris Partnership - Glastonbury, Off the A39 in Glastonbury
Date: 07 Jul 2010
New industrial and office building completed in Glastonbury.
National architects practice, The Harris Partnership has this week handed over £2.5 million new business premises in Glastonbury, to UK injection moulding company, Avalon Plastics. Comprising of a 60,000 sq ft industrial unit it was custom designed by The Harris Partnership and built on behalf of client, Consolidated Property Group.
The site, which is situated off the A39 in Glastonbury, has historically accommodated industrial premises until it was cleared in 2005 and has been redundant ever since. However, the area has been subject to investment with new road infrastructure and new business start up units developed. Avalon Plastics has relocated from premises just opposite.
The Harris Partnership has worked closely with the local planning authority due to the extremely strict planning conditions that need to be adhered to in Glastonbury. Peter Hoole, senior technician at The Harris Partnership, comments: "We achieved planning consent for the new build accommodation in August 2009 but there were 20 conditions that need to be satisfied which is unusual for a manufacturing plant of this nature. However, we managed to secure a timely start on site for our client in October 2009 and are pleased to hand the end result over to Avalon Plastics on schedule."
In total the new premises comprise of 5,000 sq ft of office space, a production area of 32,000 sq ft and 23,000 sq ft of warehouse accommodation. The local authority was also keen that the building was aesthetically pleasing due to its location at a gateway entrance to Glastonbury. Therefore, The Harris Partnership took this into consideration and situated the two storey office element at the most prominent corner of the building together with an interesting spiral staircase.
Keith Butler, managing director at Avalon Plastics commented: "We are a thriving local business employing around 140 people and had outgrown our premises. We were keen to stay in the locality; the move to new premises is an exciting time for us and will help to facilitate further growth of the company."
