BCSC - Retail General - Shopping Centre Awards

Date: 10 Jun 2002

BCSC, the retail property organisation, has launched its Shopping Centre Awards competition for 2002.

The BCSC Shopping Centre Awards are the leading recognition of achievement within the shopping centre and retail property industry - equivalent to a film Oscar. The BCSC Awards are designed to benchmark the industry’s continuing commitment to the improvement of quality of the built environment and include awards and commendations for New and Refurbished/Extended Centres.

Entry forms, which are now available from BCSC, must be completed by noon on 26 July 2002.

This is the 17th year for the BCSC awards programme. This year Peter Coleman (Building Design Partnership) and Neil Varnham (Henderson Global Investors) are joining the judging panel that includes Nigel Woolner (Chapman Taylor) Kay Chaldecott (Capital Shopping Centres); Bill Watts (Jones Lang LaSalle) Andrew Varley (Next) and Gordon Gabbani of REALM. Judges will visit the competing centres in September and October.

Comments Nigel Woolner, Chairman of the BCSC Awards Panel:

“UK retail schemes are increasingly recognized as world-leaders in terms of urban regeneration and design innovation. The BCSC awards celebrate that work and will build on the ideas set out in BCSC’s recent publication Urban Design for Retail Environments.”

West Quay in Southampton won BCSC 2001 Award for the best New Centre, and The Chimes in Uxbridge and Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth both won commendations in the New Centre category. The Bridges in Sunderland and The Capitol Centre in Cardiff, both won commendations in the Refurbishment and Extension Category.
