BCSC - Retail General - 2002 Town Centre Environment Awards
Date: 13 Jun 2002
BCSC, the retail property organisation, has launched its 2002 Town Centre Environment Awards.
The awards are open for entries from local authorities and organisations associated with town centre improvement and management. Inaugurated in 1991, the awards are given to town centres that have significantly improved their environment and services for both visitors and shoppers with resulting benefits to retailers and increased attraction for inward investors.
Entries must be received by 12:00 noon on Monday 29 July 2002 and the presentation of the awards will take place at the BCSC Annual Conference at the MICC/GMEX in Manchester which takes place from 5-7 November 2002.
Comments John Wheeler, Chairman of Centros Miller and chairman of the judging committee:
“The Town Centre Environment awards are a way of acknowledging the effort undertaken by Government and civic bodies, community representatives, town centre management teams and landlords to improve their surrounding environments.
“Successful projects are often able to kick start a virtuous circle of improvement and investment. If it is a “nice place to be” then the village, town or city is on a much stronger and more competitive footing with its neighbours.”
Applications submitted by large cities through to small towns and neighbourhood centres will be accepted for the following categories:
- Town Centre Environment Award – as the main award, judges will be looking at overall strategies and action plans for town centre improvement, especially where there is a genuine partnership between the local authority and the private sector. These include measures to improve town centre ambience, streetscapes, signage, safety and the evening economy, in consultation with all town centre users.
- The Transport and Accessibility Award – this award focuses on transport and traffic schemes that have improved access to the town centre and as a result, its environment, whilst adhering to Government policy. Eligible schemes must have contributed to the wider strategic vision of town.
- The Design Award – for town centres that have developed an environmental improvement scheme through design demonstrating creative thinking, practical application and public consultation.
- The Community Award – which focuses on environmental improvement schemes that involve local people (either community or business) working in partnership with local authorities.
The judging panel for the 2002 awards comprises:
John Wheeler Chairman, Centros Miller Limited
John Gregory Head of Property Services, Eastleigh Borough Council
Tony Hatch Head of Property, Bhs Ltd
