BDP - General - BDP / Whicheloe Macfarlane Merger

Date: 04 Nov 2002

The Directors of Building Design Partnership and Whicheloe Macfarlane have reached agreement in principle to merge the interests of the two companies. Subject to the completion of legal and financial documentation, the Whicheloe Macfarlane offices would become part of the 800 strong Architecture, Design and Engineering firm of BDP. Two Whicheloe Macfarlane Directors would join BDP’s Board.

Whicheloe Macfarlane, who have a multi-professional staff of 80, have a particularly strong track record and depth of skills in hospital design, which will enhance and strengthen BDP’s own hospital design capabilities. The development of the firm’s main offices at Bristol and Southampton will also strengthen BDP’s network of offices in Britain and Ireland.

The Directors of both firms are committed to improving the quality of healthcare design.

Recent Whicheloe Macfarlane projects include the Bristol Children’s Hospital, the Princess Margaret Hospital Swindon, development of the Southampton General Hospital, as well as work for several universities.

BDP Chairman, Nick Terry, said,
“We are delighted at the prospect of welcoming the Directors and staff of Whicheloe Macfarlane into BDP. We are committed to developing our skills of Architecture, Design and Engineering in the healthcare market. This merger would provide a critical mass of skills in the South of England to complement our teams in the North.”

Whicheloe Macfarlane Managing Director, Andrew Shaw, said
“We believe that BDP’s design strengths and scale would facilitate the next phase of development of our well established offices in Bristol and Southampton and offer a greater depth of service in the healthcare, education and commercial buildings sectors.”
