Lend Lease - Retail Development - Norwich, Chapelfield
Date: 29 Nov 2002
Construction has commenced on Chapelfield, the new £275 million retail development in Norwich city centre.
With three years until opening, it is already over 60% let with more than 30 units either signed or under offer.
Chapelfield will offer a cosmopolitan collection of quality retail space including ten large stores and 80 shops, alongside restaurants, residential and landscaped areas in the heart of the historic city.
Built on the site of the former Nestlé factory, the scheme will be anchored by a 140,000 sq ft (13,000 sqm) House of Fraser department store, which will be the largest retail outlet in the city. In addition, H&M Hennes and Mango have taken a 30,000 sqft (2,787 sqm) unit and an 8,000 (740 sqm) unit respectively. Sports Soccer and JD Sports, the sports fashion retailers, have taken 20,000 sqft (1,858 sqm) and 15,000 (1,394 sqm) units. Other retailers already signed up for their first stores in Norwich includes Beaverbrooks and Fraser Hart, the jewellers, whilst terms are agreed with Zara, Warehouse and Borders amongst others.
Fifteen catering outlets and restaurants are proposed as part of the development, ten of which are already under offer. The focal point for the restaurants will be the dining terrace overlooking Chapelfield Plain, the courtyard linking Marks & Spencer with one of the two prime entrances into the development. Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) announced in the spring that it would be purchasing the development when it is completed in Autumn 2005. It will be the largest single retail destination opening in the UK that year.
